Laminate vs. luxury vinyl plank in Wichita

From across the room, laminate and vinyl plank look almost the same. Both click together as a floating floor, both come in convincing wood looks, and both cost far less than hardwood. The real differences show up underfoot, around water and in basements. Here's how the two compare in Wichita homes, from Delano bungalows to new builds in Maize.

Quick answer

Installed laminate runs about $3–$8 per square foot in Wichita and LVP about $4–$9 per square foot, so a 500 sq ft room lands near $1,500–$4,000 for laminate or $2,000–$4,500 for LVP. Both usually go in within one to three days. LVP handles water and basements better. Laminate feels firmer and resists scratches well.

Option A

Laminate Flooring

A dense fiberboard core with a printed wood image and a hard, clear wear layer on top. Clicks together and floats over an underlayment.

Option B

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

A plank built from vinyl layers, often with a rigid stone-plastic or wood-plastic core. Clicks together and floats, and the core itself doesn't swell with water.

Should I use vinyl or laminate?

Start with where the floor is going. In any room where water shows up regularly, such as a kitchen, a bathroom, a laundry room or a mudroom off the garage, we usually point people toward LVP. Its core doesn't absorb water, so a dishwasher leak or a kid's bath splash won't puff up the edges.

In dry rooms on the main floor, laminate earns a serious look. It often costs a little less, it's harder on the surface, and it has a firmer, more wood-like feel when you walk on it. Plenty of Wichita families put LVP in the kitchen and baths and laminate in the bedrooms, and that works fine as long as the colors and heights line up at the transitions.

Which one works in a Wichita basement?

Basements are common around Wichita, and concrete slabs give off moisture even when they look dry. That is the main reason LVP is the default for most basement flooring jobs here. A rigid-core plank over a proper vapor barrier tolerates the damp and the occasional seep after a heavy spring storm.

Standard laminate is a fiberboard product, and long exposure to slab moisture can make it swell, cup or grow musty under the planks. Some newer laminates are rated for below-grade use, and we'll install those where the manufacturer allows it. Before any basement floor goes down, we check the slab for moisture and flatness, because both products need a flat surface to click together properly.

How do pets, kids and Kansas weather affect the choice?

If you have big dogs, laminate's hard top layer is a real advantage. It resists scratches from claws better than many budget vinyl planks. If your pets have accidents, though, LVP is safer, because urine left in a laminate seam can soak into the core.

Kids are mostly a water question too: spilled cups, wet boots and bath time. LVP shrugs those off. Laminate handles quick cleanups but not puddles left for hours.

Kansas swings from humid summers to dry, cold winters. Both floors expand and contract with temperature and humidity, so both need a gap at the walls hidden under trim, and both should sit in the house before installation. Skipping that gap is one of the common reasons floating floors buckle in a Wichita August.

Can you mop vinyl flooring and laminate?

You can mop vinyl plank with a damp mop and a cleaner made for vinyl. Avoid steam mops, which can weaken the joints and finish over time. Laminate wants less water: a dry microfiber mop for routine cleaning and a lightly damp, well-wrung mop when it needs more. Never leave puddles on laminate.

That cleaning difference matters most in kitchens. If you like to mop often, LVP is the easier floor to live with.

Which one helps resale in Wichita?

Buyers in Wichita neighborhoods like Reflection Ridge, Andover and Bel Aire have come to expect durable, waterproof floors in kitchens and living areas, and LVP shows up in many listings. Good laminate still reads as a wood-look floor and is a clear step up from worn carpet.

What hurts resale more than the product type is a choppy layout: four different floors on one level, or mismatched heights at doorways. A common design guideline is to keep about three flooring types or fewer visible on one level. If you're selling soon, one continuous LVP floor through the main living spaces is usually the simplest story for buyers.

The verdict

Choose LVP for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, homes with pets that have accidents, or anywhere you want one floor running through the whole level. It costs a little more, and it removes most of the water worry.

Choose laminate for dry main-floor rooms when you want a firmer, wood-like feel and strong scratch resistance at a slightly lower price. You can buy either product through us or bring your own from a store, and we'll install it. Request a free in-home measure and we'll price both in writing.

Questions people ask

Is laminate cheaper than vinyl plank in Wichita?

Usually a little. Installed laminate runs about $3–$8 per square foot and LVP about $4–$9, though a premium laminate can cost more than a basic LVP.

Is laminate waterproof?

Most laminate is water resistant on the surface, not waterproof. Water that sits in the seams can swell the fiberboard core, so we don't recommend it for bathrooms or standard basements.

Which is better with dogs?

Laminate resists claw scratches well. LVP is the safer pick if accidents are likely, since liquid can't damage its core.

Can I buy my own laminate or LVP and have you install it?

Yes. Many customers buy flooring from a big-box or local flooring store and hire us for installation. We'll confirm you have enough material, usually 5–10% extra for cuts.

Can laminate or LVP go over my old floor?

Often yes, over a flat, solid floor like sheet vinyl or tile. Carpet always comes out first. We check flatness during the free measure and price any subfloor prep up front.
