Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Installation in Wichita, KS

Luxury vinyl plank is the floor most Wichita homeowners ask us about. It handles spills, pets and basement humidity, and it looks like wood or stone without the upkeep. How long it lasts depends far more on the prep under it than on the box it came in, so that's where we spend our time.

  • Floating click-lock or glue-down installs
  • Old flooring removal and haul-away
  • Subfloor checked for flatness and moisture
  • Install flooring you bought, or buy through us

Quick answer

LVP installation in Wichita usually runs $4–$9 per square foot installed, materials and labor together. A 500 sq ft living room and hallway often lands around $2,000 to $4,500, plus about $1–$3 per square foot if old flooring has to come out. Most jobs that size take one to two days once the floor is prepped.

How much does LVP installation cost in Wichita?

Most LVP jobs around Wichita and Sedgwick County fall between $4 and $9 per square foot installed. Here's roughly how that breaks out by product grade:

Product grade Typical installed price What you get
Entry level $4–$5.50 per sq ft Thinner plank, lighter wear layer, fine for bedrooms and rentals
Mid range $5.50–$7 per sq ft Rigid core, thicker wear layer, attached pad on many lines
Upper range $7–$9 per sq ft Thick wear layer, wider or longer planks, more realistic texture

And by room size, using a mid-range product on a clean, flat floor:

Area Typical total
200 sq ft bedroom $1,100–$1,400
500 sq ft living area and hall $2,750–$3,500
1,000 sq ft main floor $5,500–$7,000

Add about $1–$3 per square foot to tear out and haul away old carpet, vinyl or tile. Stairs are priced per step. We also order about 5–10% extra material to cover cuts and waste, more for a diagonal layout. For a deeper breakdown, see our LVP installation cost guide or the general Wichita flooring cost guide.

Can I buy my own LVP and have you install it?

Yes. Plenty of our customers pick their plank at a big-box store or a local flooring store and hire us only for the labor. Others would rather have us source the material so there's one price and one point of contact. Both work.

If you buy your own, send us the product name before you buy so we can confirm the quantity, including waste. Check that the boxes share one lot number so the color matches, and buy matching transitions and stair nosing at the same time. Your written quote will list labor, prep and any material we supply on separate lines.

What has to happen to the subfloor before LVP goes down?

LVP is thin and flexible compared with wood or tile, so it shows every dip and ridge underneath. Most makers call for a floor that's flat within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Here's what we check on the first visit:

  • Flatness. High spots get ground down and low spots get filled with patch or self-leveling compound.
  • Moisture. Concrete slabs and basement floors get a moisture reading. LVP itself won't be hurt by water, but trapped moisture under it can cause mold and odor.
  • Squeaks and soft spots. Loose plywood gets screwed down. Damaged or rotted sections need subfloor repair first.
  • What's already there. LVP can sometimes go over a single layer of old sheet vinyl, but not over carpet or cushioned vinyl.

In older Wichita homes, especially those built before the 1980s, old vinyl tile and its black adhesive can contain asbestos. Square 9x9 tiles are the usual suspect. We test or arrange testing before we disturb suspect flooring, and if it's positive, we either cover it in place where that's allowed or have it removed properly before our work starts.

Is LVP a good choice for kitchens, bathrooms and basements?

For most homes, yes. Rigid-core LVP is waterproof, so a dropped glass of water or a leaky dishwasher won't swell the planks the way it would laminate or wood. That makes it a natural fit for kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms and the many finished basements around Wichita. Our basement flooring page covers moisture testing and underlayment in more detail.

Can you mop vinyl flooring? Yes. A damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner is what most makers recommend. Skip steam mops and soaking the floor, since water can work into the seams and edges over time.

LVP is less ideal in rooms with strong direct sun, where some products fade or expand, or if you want a floor you can sand and refinish later. If you're weighing options, see laminate vs. vinyl plank, LVP vs. hardwood and tile vs. LVP.

What are the most common LVP installation mistakes?

Most failed vinyl floors trace back to a few shortcuts:

  1. Skipping acclimation. Planks should sit in the room at normal temperature before install.
  2. No expansion gap. Floating floors need a small gap at walls and doorframes, hidden by trim. Without it, the floor can buckle in summer.
  3. Pinning the floor down. Setting heavy kitchen cabinets or an island on top of a floating floor stops it from moving. We install around cabinets, not under them.
  4. Ignoring the 1/3 offset rule. End joints should be staggered, typically by at least 6 to 8 inches and, on long planks, by no more than about a third of the plank length. That keeps the floor stable and avoids an obvious stair-step pattern.
  5. Wrong underlayment. Doubling up foam under a plank with an attached pad can make the click joints flex and break.
  6. Poor transitions. Doorways, stair edges and changes in floor height need the right molding.

A planning guideline many designers call the "rule of 3": keep to about three flooring types or colors visible on one level.

How long does LVP installation take, and do you need a permit?

A bedroom or two usually takes one day. A 500 to 1,000 sq ft main floor typically takes two to three days, longer if we're removing old tile, leveling a slab or doing stairs. Floating floors can be walked on right away; glue-down floors need about a day before furniture goes back. For a room-by-room look, see how long flooring installation takes.

Swapping one floor covering for another usually doesn't need a permit. In Wichita and Sedgwick County, building permits go through the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) at 316-660-1840. If your job turns up structural subfloor or joist problems, we check with MABCD before that work starts.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Installation questions

How much do they charge to install LVP in Wichita?

Usually $4–$9 per square foot installed with materials, or less if you supply the plank and we provide labor only. Removal of old flooring and floor leveling add to that.

How much does it cost to install 1,000 sq ft of LVP?

Roughly $4,000 to $9,000 installed, depending on the product grade. Tear-out and subfloor prep can add $1,000 to $3,000 or more.

Can LVP go over my existing floor?

Often it can go over a single layer of flat, well-bonded sheet vinyl or tile with filled grout lines. It can't go over carpet or cushioned vinyl, and the floor still has to be flat.

Do I need to move my own furniture?

We can move most furniture for you, and the quote will say so. Please clear small and fragile items first.

Is LVP a good floor for dogs?

It holds up well to pet accidents and water bowls. A thicker wear layer resists scratches better, and keeping nails trimmed helps any floor.

When is a good time of year to install LVP?

Retailers often run sales around holidays and late winter, and installer schedules tend to be more open in winter. Any month works as long as the planks acclimate indoors first.
