Laminate Flooring Installation in Wichita, KS

Laminate gives you the look of wood plank at a lower price, with a hard top layer that stands up to kids, chairs and dog nails. It's a floating floor, so it clicks together over an underlayment instead of being glued or nailed. That makes it quick to install, as long as the floor underneath is flat and the room stays dry.

Quick answer

Laminate flooring installation in the Wichita area usually costs $3–$8 per square foot installed. A 500 sq ft living room and hallway often totals about $1,500–$4,000, depending on the plank and how much prep the floor needs. Most jobs that size take one to two days, plus a day or two for planks to acclimate first.

How much does laminate flooring installation cost in Wichita?

Most laminate jobs we quote around Wichita and Sedgwick County come in at $3–$8 per square foot installed.

Room size Approximate installed cost
150 sq ft bedroom $450–$1,200
300 sq ft family room $900–$2,400
500 sq ft living room and hall $1,500–$4,000
1,000 sq ft main floor $3,000–$8,000

The low end assumes a basic 7 to 8 mm plank going over a flat, clean subfloor with carpet already gone. The high end covers thicker 12 mm planks, water-resistant lines, carpet removal and haul-away (often $1–$3 per square foot), floor leveling and lots of doorways to trim around. Stairs are priced per step, since each one needs a stair nose and careful cutting.

Should I use vinyl or laminate?

It depends mostly on water. Laminate has a wood-fiber core under its printed top layer. Many newer lines resist spills for hours, but standing water that gets into the seams can still swell the core. Luxury vinyl plank has a plastic or stone-composite core that doesn't swell.

Here's how we usually steer people:

  • Bedrooms, living rooms, dens and upstairs halls: laminate is a great value. It's harder on the surface than most vinyl, so it resists scratches from pets and furniture well.
  • Kitchens, laundry rooms and full baths: we usually recommend LVP or tile. A water-resistant laminate can work in a kitchen if you wipe up spills quickly.
  • Basements: generally not laminate unless the product is specifically rated for below-grade use. Our basement flooring page explains why.

What is the difference between hardwood and laminate?

Hardwood is real wood all the way through (or a real wood veneer on engineered boards). It can be sanded and refinished when it wears. Laminate is a photo of wood under a clear wear layer, bonded to a fiberboard core. It can't be sanded, so when it's worn out, it gets replaced.

Laminate costs much less to install and handles scratches better than many site-finished hardwoods. Hardwood feels more solid underfoot, adds more to resale in many neighborhoods and lasts for generations. If your 1950s College Hill or Crown Heights house already has oak under the carpet, refinishing it may cost about the same as new laminate, so we'll always check before you buy planks. If you want new wood, see hardwood floor installation.

Can I buy my own laminate and have you install it?

Yes. A lot of our customers buy laminate at a big-box store or a local flooring shop and call us for the install. We install; we don't run a store, so it's a normal request. We can also source flooring for you.

If you're buying your own, order 5–10% extra for a straight layout and more for diagonal rooms or lots of closets. Check whether the plank has underlayment attached. If it does, we usually add only a moisture barrier over concrete. If it doesn't, we'll quote the right pad. Buy all of it from the same production lot, and have it delivered a couple of days before we start so it can acclimate in the house.

What are common mistakes when installing laminate?

Most laminate problems we get called to fix trace back to a few shortcuts:

  • Skipping acclimation. Kansas summers are humid and winters are dry. Planks that go in straight from a cold garage can gap or buckle later.
  • No expansion gap. Laminate moves with the seasons. It needs a small gap at every wall, cabinet and doorway, hidden by baseboard or quarter round.
  • Not leveling the subfloor. High spots and dips make the floor flex, click and eventually break at the joints.
  • Wrong underlayment. Doubling up pads or using a soft carpet pad makes the locking joints fail.
  • Pinning it down. Cabinets, kitchen islands and heavy built-ins shouldn't sit on top of a floating floor.
  • Poor transitions. Long runs through several rooms often need a break at a doorway so the floor can move.

If your floor needs leveling first, that's covered under subfloor repair and floor prep.

How long does laminate installation take?

Laminate is one of the quicker floors to put in. A single bedroom is often done in half a day to one day. A 500 to 800 sq ft open living area usually takes one to two days, more if carpet removal, leveling or stairs are involved. You can walk on it as soon as we finish.

Swapping floor coverings like this usually doesn't need a permit. Our installation timeline guide walks through what happens each day.

Laminate Flooring Installation questions

How much does it cost to install 1,000 sq ft of laminate?

Around Wichita, roughly $3,000–$8,000 installed. Carpet removal, leveling and stairs push it toward the higher end.

Is laminate waterproof?

Most laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof. Spills wiped up promptly are fine, but standing water or a leak can swell the core at the seams.

Can laminate go over my existing floor?

It can usually float over flat, well-bonded vinyl or tile. Carpet and pad always come out first.

Can you mop laminate?

Use a damp, well-wrung mop or a spray mop with a cleaner made for laminate. Avoid soaking the floor or using a steam mop.

Does laminate need underlayment?

Yes. Some planks have it attached. Over concrete, a moisture barrier goes down too.
