Carpet vs. luxury vinyl plank in Wichita

A lot of Wichita ranch homes and newer subdivision houses came with wall-to-wall carpet in every living area. When it wears out, the question is whether to replace it with carpet again or switch to vinyl plank. The answer often differs by room, so here's how they compare in living rooms, bedrooms, basements and stairs.

Quick answer

Installed carpet runs about $3–$7 per square foot in Wichita and LVP about $4–$9 per square foot. For a 500 sq ft area, that's roughly $1,500–$3,500 for carpet or $2,000–$4,500 for LVP. Most rooms take a day or two either way. Carpet is softer and quieter. LVP handles pets, spills and basements better.

Option A

Carpet

Wall-to-wall carpet stretched over a foam or rubber pad and held by tack strip at the walls. Seams are joined on site.

Option B

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

Wood-look vinyl planks, usually with a rigid core, that click together and float over the subfloor or slab. Waterproof core.

How much do carpet installers charge compared with LVP?

Carpet is usually the lower-cost floor to install, and it goes in fast. Our carpet installation range of about $3–$7 per square foot includes the pad, and most of the spread comes from the carpet itself. A dense, stain-resistant carpet with a quality pad sits near the top. LVP installation runs about $4–$9 per square foot, depending on plank thickness, wear layer and how much prep the floor needs.

Both can carry extra costs. Removing and hauling old flooring often adds about $1–$3 per square foot, and stairs are priced per step. LVP needs a flatter subfloor than carpet does, so a dip that carpet hides may need to be leveled first. See the carpet installation cost guide for how those pieces add up.

Which floor is better with pets and kids?

For most Wichita households with dogs, cats or small children, LVP is the easier floor to keep clean. Accidents, water bowls and spilled cereal wipe up without soaking into a pad. Carpet can look fine on top while the pad below holds odor, which is why pet owners often replace carpet sooner than they planned.

Carpet does have real advantages for families. It's softer for crawling babies and kids playing on the floor, and it's less slippery for older dogs. Many homeowners split the difference: LVP in the main living areas and kitchen, carpet in the bedrooms.

What about basements and seasonal humidity?

Basements are common around Wichita, and a heavy spring rain can bring water through a foundation that stays dry the rest of the year. Carpet over a damp slab can grow mildew in the pad, and a wet event usually means pulling it out. LVP over a vapor barrier tolerates that much better, and wet planks can usually be lifted, dried and reused. That's why LVP is the common pick for basement flooring here.

If your basement is consistently dry and you want a cozy family room, carpet can still work. We check the slab for moisture first and tell you honestly what we see. Kansas summers are humid, so a dehumidifier in the basement helps either floor.

What should I know before pulling up old carpet?

Old carpet sometimes hides surprises, good and bad. In older central Wichita homes, there may be original oak hardwood underneath, which can often be refinished for less than a new floor. Pull back a corner in a closet before you decide.

In other homes, there may be old vinyl tile under the carpet. Some older vinyl tile and its adhesive, especially 9x9 tiles, can contain asbestos. We test or arrange testing before disturbing suspect material. If testing finds a problem, you'll know before any work starts.

Does carpet or LVP help resale in Wichita?

In living rooms, kitchens and main hallways, buyers in Wichita generally favor hard surfaces, and LVP shows up in many listings in Andover, Derby and Bel Aire. Worn or stained carpet in those spaces tends to read as a project to buyers.

In bedrooms, carpet is still widely accepted and often preferred. If you're getting a house ready to sell or rent, a common approach is LVP in the shared spaces and fresh, neutral carpet in the bedrooms, keeping no more than about three flooring types visible on one level.

The verdict

Choose carpet for bedrooms, upstairs rooms and a cozy family room where comfort and quiet matter most, or when keeping cost down is the priority. It's also a solid pick for stairs if you want grip.

Choose LVP for living rooms, kitchens, basements and any home with pets, allergies or frequent spills. Many Wichita homes end up with both. You can buy flooring through us or bring your own, and we'll install it. Request a free in-home measure and we'll quote each room in writing.

Questions people ask

Is carpet cheaper than LVP?

Usually. Installed carpet runs about $3–$7 per square foot with pad, and LVP about $4–$9. A premium carpet can cost as much as mid-range LVP.

Is LVP cold in Kansas winters?

It feels cooler than carpet, especially over a basement slab. Area rugs, slippers and an LVP product with an attached pad make a noticeable difference.

Can LVP go on stairs?

Yes, with matching stair nose pieces, though it takes more labor than carpet. Stairs are priced per step for both.

Is carpet or LVP better for allergies?

LVP, in most cases. Carpet holds dust and pet dander until it's vacuumed or cleaned, while a hard floor can be swept and mopped clean.

How long does it take to switch from carpet to LVP?

Most rooms take a day or two, including carpet removal. See how long flooring installation takes for whole-house timing.
