Wichita Flooring Installation

Carpet Installation in Wichita, KS

Carpet is still the most common floor in Wichita bedrooms, from 1970s ranches in Westlink to newer homes in Maize and Goddard. It's soft, quiet and warm on a January morning. A carpet job looks simple, but stretching, seam placement and the pad underneath decide whether it lies flat for years or ripples in one.

Quick answer

Carpet installation in Wichita usually costs $3–$7 per square foot installed, including pad. Three average bedrooms totaling about 450 sq ft often land around $1,350 to $3,150, and stairs are priced per step. Most homes take a single day, and you can walk on new carpet right away.

How much does carpet installation cost in Wichita?

Most carpet jobs we quote around Wichita fall between $3 and $7 per square foot installed, with new pad included. Carpet is often sold by the square yard, so it helps to know that one square yard is 9 square feet. A $27 per square yard carpet is $3 per square foot before pad and labor.

Carpet grade Typical installed price Good for
Builder or rental grade $3–$4 per sq ft Spare rooms, rentals, short-term updates
Mid grade nylon or polyester $4–$5.50 per sq ft Bedrooms and family rooms
Dense, premium fiber or wool $5.50–$7 per sq ft Main living areas, homes with kids and pets

Fiber matters as much as thickness. Nylon is the most resilient for busy rooms and springs back from furniture dents. Polyester feels soft, resists stains and costs less, but can mat sooner in hallways. Wool is natural and long-lived but costs the most. Face weight and density on the label tell you more than how plush a sample feels in the store.

Expect extra for tearing out old carpet when it isn't included, repairing subfloor, and stairs, which are priced per step because each one is cut and fitted by hand. Our carpet installation cost guide goes deeper.

How much do carpet fitters charge for labor only?

If you've already bought your carpet and pad, labor-only installation is a common way to do it. Plenty of Wichita homeowners pick their carpet at a big-box store or a local flooring store and call us to install it. That's fine with us.

Labor-only pricing covers removal, tack strip, pad, stretching, seaming and trim work, and it's quoted per square foot with stairs per step. Before you buy, send us your room measurements or let us measure. Carpet comes off a roll, usually 12 feet wide, so the amount you need depends on room shape and seam placement, not just square footage. Buying too little means a second order from a different dye lot that may not match. We also unroll and look over your carpet before cutting it, since a cut roll usually can't go back to the store.

Why does the pad matter so much?

The pad takes the pounding from every footstep. A thin or soft pad lets the carpet backing flex too much, and that's when you see matting, ripples and worn paths in a few years.

Most carpet makers list a pad thickness and density they want under their product. For typical cut-pile carpet in a bedroom or family room, that's often around 7/16 inch and a fairly dense rebond pad. Berber and low, tight loops usually need a thinner, firmer pad. Thicker isn't always better.

In a basement, we look for a moisture-resistant pad and check the slab for dampness first. If your basement has ever taken on water, read our basement flooring page before choosing carpet down there.

What does good carpet installation look like?

A few signs of a carpet job done right:

  • Power stretching. We stretch carpet tight with a power stretcher, not only a knee kicker. Loose carpet is the main cause of ripples.
  • Seams where you won't notice. Seams run with the light from windows and out of main walkways where possible, and they're sealed so the edges don't fray.
  • Clean edges. Carpet is tucked tight at the baseboard with no gaps, and transitions to tile or vinyl get the right metal or wood strip.
  • Stairs fitted step by step. Pile direction runs down the stairs, and each tread is wrapped tight to the nose.
  • A sound subfloor. We screw down squeaky spots once the old carpet is out, since that's the only time to reach them.

Pulling up old carpet in a house from the 1940s to 1960s often reveals original oak. If you find hardwood, it might be worth hardwood floor refinishing instead of new carpet. And if old vinyl tile shows up in a hallway or basement in a pre-1980s home, we test or arrange testing for asbestos before disturbing it.

Carpet or hard flooring: which suits each room?

Carpet makes the most sense in bedrooms, upstairs hallways, media rooms and stairs, where comfort and quiet matter more than spill resistance. It costs less than most hard floors and feels warmer in a Kansas winter.

Hard flooring like LVP usually wins in kitchens, entries, bathrooms, laundry rooms and homes with pets that have accidents. A lot of Wichita homes end up with both: carpet in the bedrooms and vinyl plank in the living areas. See carpet vs. LVP or our LVP installation page if you're on the fence.

How long does carpet installation take, and do you need a permit?

Most whole-house carpet jobs take one day, and a few bedrooms often take half a day. Stairs and subfloor repairs can add time. You can walk on the carpet as soon as we finish. New carpet smell fades within a few days with the windows open. For timing on other floor types, see how long flooring installation takes.

Replacing carpet doesn't usually need a permit. In Wichita and Sedgwick County, permits go through the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD), 316-660-1840. If we find structural subfloor or joist problems, we check with MABCD before repairing them.

Carpet Installation questions

How much does it cost to carpet a 12x12 room?

A 12x12 room is 144 sq ft, so about $430 to $1,000 installed with pad at $3–$7 per square foot. Small rooms can carry a minimum charge.

Do you move furniture?

We can move most furniture, and your quote will say what's included. Please clear closet floors, dressers with breakables and anything fragile beforehand.

Do you haul away the old carpet?

Yes. Removal and disposal of old carpet and pad can be included and is listed on your written quote.

Will you need to trim my doors?

Sometimes. If new carpet and pad are thicker than the old, interior doors may drag and need a small trim at the bottom.

Can carpet go in a basement?

Yes, if the slab stays dry. We check for moisture and use a moisture-resistant pad. If the basement has had water before, LVP or tile is a safer choice.
